First and best computer [[OS]] for the IBM PC compatibles, never really beaten by [[Windows]] or whatever [[Apple]] are doing these days. Highly influenced by [[UNIX]] especially after version 2. Single-tasking OS, so popular for gaming many years after Windows eclipsed in in ordinary usage.

Not really bettered for PCs until [[Linux]] came along in the early 1990s.
