First and best computer OS for the IBM PC compatibles, never really beaten by Windows or whatever Apple are doing these days. Highly influenced by UNIX especially after version 2. Single-tasking OS, so popular for gaming many years after Windows eclipsed in in ordinary usage.

Not really bettered until Linux came along in the early 1990s.
