Theory of the Forms

From Plato's Republic. Essentially, templates. Descriptions of idealised things that have an a-priori existence. E.g. the Form of the chair, the form of the table, etc. Culminating in the the Form of the Good, that essence of goodness.

A patent is essentially a Form. It describes an idealised object and establishes properties of it, or rather restrictions of manufacture.
