Hid up an oak try while pursued by Parliament. Got out of the country and after his father's execution for treason was king in exile in France, initially at the court of Louis XIV and then in Holland. Eventually got brought back the usual establishment stitch-up.

No legitimate children although plenty of illegitimate. Princess Diana was a descendent. Due to lack of legitimate issue his brother succeeded him as James II.

King Charles III was named after him.
